Photowalking Utah – Ogden Recap

Canon 40D * EF-24-105mm f/4.0L * ISO 100 * 1/125 second * f/4

I had a great time at our Photowalk last Saturday.  It was held in Odgen Utah which is a quick 15 minute drive for me.  We all met at the Union Station, after a brief discussion about future photowalks and welcoming new photowalkers we all headed towards the old trains on display.

My wife joined me just as the group was heading up 25th street, we took about an hour break from the group to grab some dinner at Roosters.  We had plans after dinner to drive to Eden to see the hot air balloon festival night glow.  On our way back to the car we met up with the group, what was left of them.  It was getting dark and the group wanted to play around with speedlights and gels to light up the trains, our plans then changed.  The photo above of Nate was just one of the many taken.  He wins the prize for having the most accessories on hand.  He just kept pulling out gels, snoots, clamps, wireless triggers etc.  all night.  He was elected as our model, I’m guessing it’s due to his rebel hair style.  Nate, you da’ man!

I’ve had a strong interest in doing off camera flash.  I purchased multiple colored gels yesterday and am in the process of adding another strobe to my collection.  I really like what the blue and CTO gel added to the mood of this picture.  This is the reason I attend the photowalks.  It’s a great time to rub shoulders with other photogs and try/learn new things.

Be sure to visit my flickr set and our flickr group for all the photos and announcements.  Rich Legg has something in the works that sounds like it’s going to be a big hit for next month.

Post-Photowalking Utah – TRAX

Canon 40D * Canon EF-24-105mm f/4.0 lens * ISO 400 * 1/1600 second * f/8

Had a blast once again at our March Photowalking Utah event. It was a cold windy day but it didn’t stop about twenty-five of us. We had quite a few newbies join this time.

We all boarded the TRAX light-rail and rode around the city stopping at a few locations for a mini (15 minutes) photo shoot before we boarded the next train.

I felt a little out of my comfort zone, I just purchased a Canon 40D and am not familiar with all the functions. I’m going on a business trip tomorrow to Seattle and am planning on getting out to shoot at night to get familiar with my new toy. So far I’m really impressed in the design and speed, this is definitely a step up from my Canon XTi.

You can check all the photos from the event here. My Flickr set here, be sure to check back. I will be adding more photos later this week when I get time to process them.

Photowalking – John A. Moran Eye Center

Canon XTi * Canon EF-24-105mm f/4.0L lens * ISO 100 * 0.3 second * f/5

Saturday was my sixth photowalk, my fourth in Utah. I really enjoy the opportunity to meet other photogs and just take photos for fun and socialize. Since It’s still winter in Utah, the event was held at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. One of the group members works in the lab and was able to arrange full access for us for a couple of hours.

The second half of the event was an instructor led photoshop presentation. Ann Torrence, a group member and great photographer gave us a preview of her workshop that she will be teaching at the Moab Photo Symposium. She focused on blending, mixing and remixing, a subject that is her own style.

I’m always impressed with photographers when they are willing to share their talents with others. She spent a lot of time preparing and did a fabulous job. I’m ready for the next event. You can check out all the photos from the event and updates for future events at Photowalking Utah.
